Faculty of Dentistry
The Faculty of Dentistry is an academic department dedicated to the comprehensive training of future dental specialists, and it typically includes a 5-year full-time undergraduate programme. Students graduate with qualifications such as Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), enabling them to work as general dental practitioners.
Academic Structure and Curriculum
The education is usually based on a progressive model divided into two main stages:
- Pre-clinical years (Years 1–2): The focus is on fundamental subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, and medical biology. Students practise practical skills in simulation laboratories using modern dental chairs and manikins.
- Clinical years (Years 3–5): Students move on to treating patients directly in university-affiliated clinics under the supervision of experienced specialists. This stage includes diagnosis, treatment planning, and complex procedures.
Specialised Departments
The faculties are divided into several specialised departments that conduct both the teaching process and clinical practice:
Therapeutic Dentistry
Focuses on conservative treatment, such as tooth fillings and the prevention of oral cavity diseases.
Orthodontics
Specialises in correcting bite (occlusion) defects and the alignment of teeth.
Paediatric Dentistry
Dedicated to the oral care of infants, children, and adolescents.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Includes complex tooth extraction, implantation, and facial operations.
Prosthetic Dentistry
The science of artificial teeth, including crowns, bridges, and dentures.
Endodontics
Focuses on root canal treatment and conditions inside the tooth.
